BRITISH author J.K. Rowling has outed one of the main characters of her best-selling Harry Potter series, telling fans in New York that the wizard Albus Dumbledore, head of Hogwarts school, was gay.

Speaking at Carnegie Hall on Friday night in her first US tour in seven years, Rowling confirmed what some fans had always suspected — that she "always thought Dumbledore was gay".

Rowling said Dumbledore fell in love with the charming wizard Gellert Grindelwald, but when Grindelwald turned out to be more interested in the dark arts than good, Dumbledore was "terribly let down" and went on to destroy his rival.

That love, she said, was Dumbledore's "great tragedy".

"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," she said.

The audience reportedly fell silent after the admission then erupted into applause. Rowling, 42, said if she had known that would be the response, she would have revealed her thoughts on Dumbledore earlier.

Fans on the top Potter fan site TheLeakyCauldron.org were divided on the news, some uncertain Rowling wasn't going to backtrack on the announcement, others saying it was unnecessary, and some welcoming the extra information on Dumbledore.

"This is even more awesome because it adds another layer to Dumbledore's character, which is already so rich and complicated. I hope he got over Grindlevald (sic) and fell in love again," wrote Amanda.

Rowling said she had read a script for the movie adaptation of the sixth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and corrected a passage in which Dumbledore was reminiscing about past loves by crossing it out and scrawling "Dumbledore is gay" over it.

Rowling, a mother of three, is estimated to be worth $US1.12 billion ($A1.25 billion), making her the first billionaire author.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — the seventh and final book in the boy wizard series — became the fastest-selling book in history when it was released in July.

More than 11 million copies were sold in the first 24 hours in the US and Britain.

What to do leh??? Very obvious that my GPA so far wont allow me to enter a local U, prayyyyy that the FYP can improve it abit more. NO TIME FOR FYP ARH!!! So many things to do, so many plants to grow and measure!!! And the modules dont look very easy also... oh ohhhhhhhh. Chim modules and chim IS and chim labs and chim project/presentations. =(

New milestone for TKD too. Change of coach... for the better barh. Die die wanna be BLACKBELT. Blarghz. and... i seriously injured someone for the first time. ARGH!!! Super duper ultra guilty. Freaked out. Dont exactly like sparring... =

Have been planning my new phone to buy for quite sometime alr, but... urgh! So indecisive. To continue my $21 Classic100 or to get the $20 iOnePlus(no caller id), to get w910i or wait for new SE to launch? And it doesnt helped when my current k750i is only... about 1.25yrs old, costing some $500 from my parents. =X

the only thing i hiam about it is that, 1. only a 2mp camera! 2. expandable memory only 2g, 3.the earpiece slot is at the wrong place lar, 4. no infra-red, my lappy doesnt have bluetooth!!! 5. might be abit too fragile for my butter fingers.

and a foodie recommendation to all... MR PRATA AT CLEMENTI HAS NICE PRATA!!! So far it has passed all the stringent fluffy-ness, crispy-ness, oily-ness, curry-ness tests! Point to note, must order Teh Tarik SIEW DAI, cos really very sweet.

eeeeeeeee!!! time flies! Entire holis is taken up by the big farming project! Watering plants, measuring plants, meeting lects, and more watering plants! URGHS. Most hardworking FYP goes to mine. gimme a A or better! Frantic session during the trial expts... whoopsie.

Had my brown belt grading! moving onwards to black tip... and the big one... BLACK BELT GRADING... !!! $100 per attempt. Gosh~! Die die must get a black belt to complete my poly tkd life! HUMPF! And its gonna be siong siong trainings from now on. OHHH MYYYY GAAAWWDDD.
